Triggerfish

The Triggerfish, known as Ħmar in Maltese, is being caught more frequently in recent years and is known as a great fighting fish. Commonly found in shallow coastal waters around Malta and Gozo, it is usually caught while bottom fishing. Triggerfish are beautifully coloured, often displaying shades of grey, blue, and yellow. Typically measuring between 25 to 40 cm, they are incredibly strong for their size. With powerful jaws, they can cut fishing lines and even break hooks. Caution is also needed due to their sharp dorsal spine. Tasty and firm, they’re excellent eating.
